BIBLE EXPLORERS GOSPELS LESSON 21

This is lesson 21 in our journey through the Gospels chronologically. This will likely take 3 years to complete, teaching weekly through the school year. The material is geared for elementary age kids. Each lesson will have a list of Scripture references, materials, introduction, object lessons, and hands on activities. Most lessons can be completed in 1- 1.5 hours. A few may need more than one class time. New lessons will be posted weekly. The posts will not have pictures because I will not be posting pictures of other people’s children. At the end of each school year, a printed version of the curriculum will be made available for purchase. This will include an appendix with printouts, game pieces, and other classroom helps.

Introduction:

This isn’t the first time that these men have been called by Jesus to follow him. They have traveled with Jesus, heard Him preach, and were there for the wedding at Cana. They also continued their regular lives, working as fishermen. This call is for them to leave the life they know completely and follow Jesus on all His travels. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record this account but Luke gives us a larger picture of what happened that day.

Activities

Object Lesson 1: Fishing

Purpose- to understand the fishing methods used by the first disciples.

1.      Read the account in Matthew and Mark. Note the similarities, and explain what made this call different from before.

2.     Demonstrate how a cast net is used (or show a video of it).

3.     Read the account in Luke. Note: the Sea of Gesseneret is another name for the Sea of Galilee.

4.    Show the Sea of Galilee on a map.

Hands on Activity 1: Tasting the Story

Purpose- to feel a connection to the disciples through eating a meal like they did.

1.      Cover tables in butcher paper.

2.     Let the kids draw the story.

3.     Cook the fish while the kids are drawing so they can smell it cooking.

4.    Let the kids taste the fish. Be sure to check for allergies first.
